We have recently published a material on how to protect your Internet traffic from the prying eyes of DNS providers. Today we are going to tell you about an additional measure of protection against tracking.

Numerous functions of modern websites are provided using the JavaScript programming language. You can find JavaScript on over 95% of the sites on the web. In addition to harmless functions like animation and decoration of website elements, it is also responsible for logging and sending data about user behavior to a server, annoying pop-ups and even execution of malicious scenarios.

It can also be a problem that third-party JavaScript libraries are usually embedded in websites. If any of these libraries is compromised, the malicious code will instantly spread to all sites connected to it. And, of course, you are not immune to accidentally hitting a website with malicious code deliberately placed there.

Is it possible for Internet users to protect themselves from unsafe JavaScript? The JShelter project was launched for this purpose, its aim is to reduce the threats associated with JavaScript. The JShelter’s browser add-on creates an additional layer to control harmful actions and default browser permissions (which may initially allow these actions). The user can not only block all JavaScript, but also allow it to run with restrictions.

Installation of the browser add-on is intuitive. After installation, you can read the description of the restrictions for the various security levels of the add-on. You can switch between the levels to see the difference.

When visiting websites, you will be able to see blocked elements and JavaScript code calls. On the picture below, the extension with the recommended level of restrictions blocked 17 JavaScript calls (to view the list of blocked calls, use the “right click -> Inspect” function in your browser).

In just a few clicks, you can establish your own control over what is happening on the websites you visit.
